I use Cockos Reaper.
Brilliant freeware software that's as good as Logic for home recordings in my fair opinion. I use it a fair bit now and paid the $20 (I think?) for the personal-use license. Worth supporting such good software for such a relatively small amuont.
I record throught a Novation X-Station 49 - I wanted a synth and a hardware interface and I'm really happy with the results, the pre-amps are pretty good but I've not made much use of the synth so far. but I've used it as a MIDI controller over USB and that works pretty good.
Also, check out Red5 Audio mics if you'll be needing good quality, cheap mics. I got a RV-8 and it's pretty amazing for vocals and guitar work. Pretty much anything in fact.
We posted some stuff on MySpace not too long ago, check it out for an idea of the quality considering we're total novices and never used any computer recording equipment before I (modestly) feel the results are good!

Good luck!

i'm a fan of the edirol R09 digital recorder.
records in 24 bit wav, supports line in / microphone inputs (has its own built in as well) and is just really convenient.

Yeah they're expensive. But it's worth it. Also try the recording station from Boss. Google it and check it out. Nice toys! Take care.

Thanks, might just take some time to save money for a Macbook, but I'll see what I can do.
