I'd listen to a Gaga song if Gavin sang it so I'm probably not the best for an unbiased opinion....I can dig it! Anywhere dredg wants to go I shall follow (for the most part)

I must be the only fan that absolutely loves the new single. I fell in love with them when I heard Leitmotif and then El Cielo back in '02, so it's not like I'm not familiar with dredg's older sound. Every album since has been a big change, but always for the positive IMO. I'm not sure how anyone views "the thought of losing you" as a huge change. To me, it evokes the same emotional reaction every dredg song ever has, but now it's in the format of a slightly lighter, poppier sound. I like it, and I wouldn't have wanted dredg to repeat any of their previous sounds. dredg is always evolving, and that's why I love them.

    That new song relaxes me.
Granted, it IS different, but I respect how they forever unabashedly experiment new things.

shure they need to experiment, its their identity and we all love them because of this, but i don't really like the way they did this time...its so hard so say it, but thats my point.

I love it!!!...is it "whoa is me" or "sang real"....NOPE! Gavin and the boys have been through a lot of shit in their lives personally and professionally. Its great to see a happy Gavin when just 6 - 7 years ago he was Sober and Lost. I was in touch with him while he was writing these new tracks and his life was far from easy, so him to produce those words means HOPE. Lets get out of this depression of a life, GIVE IT UP, and enjoy it.

Thanks for bringing up the topic.

Personally, I like the new song.....I kinda dig the depeche mode vibe they're throwing in.
But if they're gonna do an album with a pop feel, I would like it if they threw in that "It's not worth it" song that I heard on youtube.
I will put a link in just in case if there's someone that hasn't heard it.

This. For all we know, the song could be a sarcastic statement concerning popular music much like parts of the song 'Ireland' were sarcastic statements concerning unambitious, closed-minded thought. As fans, we should know by now that the band's music is very contextual; therefor, assuming a band like dredg has completely flopped and sold-out over one song is a completely ridiculous notion. Lets give the most creative band in the world the benefit of the doubt for once, okay? Okay.

Um...how about stop trolling on new Dredg, be thankful that we have new Dredg music and stop the bitching? How's that? If you don't like the new stuff go listen to something else, but don't come here to egg on it.

I tried actually learning the song and I would like to take back my initial thoughts about Dino. This drumming is glorious, it's the hi-hat foot pedal beat that gives it it's complexity. Bravo.

I still have a weird relationship with this song. I am always thankful for new dredg, and I'm giving it a completely fair chance listening with new ears every time I hear it. I still just don't know what to think. When I listen, I hear that dredg magic between the lines, but it's not coming through like it usually does to me. I feel like Dino is restricted, and it's a Dan the Automator song with a hint of dredg. I want to listen to dredg, not Dan the Automator.

I am going to listen to crap out of this album though. I love dredg, I love everything they play, and I don't see myself not liking dredg. And it's the first single, I know they like it the least, so I'm not going to freak out (even though I did a little bit).

Alright with all that being said, how do people feel about "Upon Returning"? In the context of the vibe of Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy?

I think it has a different tone, and to me a lot more Dredg in it.

i created an account just to comment on this song. not to be rude or provoke anyone, but this is terrible. i too have been a fan since their beginning and have seen them countless times. listening to their stuff and especially seeing them live always inspired me to play and be a better musician myself. they're obviously fantastic players and have the ability to veer off into any musical direction they choose, and i've supported every turn they've taken thus far. i never expect "sequel albums" from any band and i absolutely advocate artistic expression, experimentation and evolution, but i hope this song makes more sense in the context of the entire album. i don't know if the dynamics of the band have changed, (i heard the singer was having twins a while back and living in Seattle) but this song doesn't mark any progress at all to my ears.

nevertheless, i'll still buy their merch and go see them when they're anywhere near me as always. they're good dudes and great musicians.

it sounds derivative of stuff from their last record, which in contrast to The Thought of Losing You, is a very good thing. i liked it.
