    Guys,

I've been a fan since Leitmotif, and I'm all for you expanding in new directions, but I can't get behind this single. The lyrics are just bad. It hurts me to say it because I love your band, but they are bad.

"Today, today is a new day, put the pain away, today."

You guys are better than this.

    Sincerely,

    A concerned fan

I, too, am slightly shocked, but I really do love this single.

No matter how much one loves a band, it's impossible to love every single song.
Just know that a band doesn't write every single song for their fans. Sometimes they'll write something personal. Either take it or leave it.

Musically, I like it, but I think it will take more time for it to really grow on me.

I agree with you Soma, the band's music is theirs to do what they want with. It concerns me that Dan the Automator made the base tracks for the record (so i have read), i fear that this will strip away the soul of the band that we have grown to love. I'm a Dredg fan, not a Dan the Automator fan. That being said, this opinion is based on one track. I am still excited about the record.

...and just to clarify, I'm not a dredg 'purist' who thinks that el cielo is the only good album the band has made. I like that the band are trying to push in a new direction, its just that the lyrics are bad. I don't even like typing that, but they make me cringe. Its like the unique kid in school that has a great sense of individuality caving to peer pressure just to fit in like everyone else, to me, its sad.

interesting, because I have always had the notion that Dredg is not trying to fit in. I like the song.

One lonely night a young man who was always barefoot was bitten on one if his bare feet by a spider. Upon examination of the localized pain he saw the spider scurrying away and then slipping into a small crevice between the floor and the baseboard. This prompted him to forgo his normal activity in bare feet and to start wearing shoes. A few days later the spider came back except this time it was is his dream. The spider apologized for his actions and swore it would never happen again. The spider started to reappear in his dreams nightly and the two soon became the best of friends. Many months later after returning home from late night out, the young man was walking into his room when he heard a crunch. He looked down and realized he had crushed his best friend who had fallen asleep waiting and worrying where his friend was. The young man was so devastated about killing his friend he decided that the thought of losing his friend was not an option. So he read many book and researched for countless hours about how to bring his friend back to life. Sadly many years passed the young man was now an old man who had spent his entire life trying to resuscitate a spider. The old man would often speculate that if he wasn’t wearing shoes, he wouldn’t have crushed his best friend. When the old man finally died the hopes of rekindling the friendship was lost forever.

This song pays tribute to the fallen friend and man’s ability to become completely consumed by pointless and false hope.

    The End.

yes, i'm a dredg fan and not a dan the automator fan....by now i'd say he sucks. i have to listen to the whole album but the drums sound like crap...dino is incredible and one of my heros, but this is soo boring! the melodie in the chorus is quite nice...
fuck, i don't know what to think...

    First, this: http://www.metalsucks.net/2011/03/14/no-thoughts-of-losing-dredg/#more-57233

Metalsucks is a site for elitist metalheads that think their opinion is greater than all others. They love dredg, which is fantastic.

Second, this track is fantastic. Every album they have gotten better. I'm glad the El Cielo purists are starting to fade into the background. A band that stays the same dies, unless your Metallica, and they suck.

That being said, I love this new song, and I can't wait for the album and the tour following.

Exactly. This song gives me the feeling that dredg is continuing to be dredg.
The band can't decide if you like a song or not. That decision is entirely up to the individual.

Mr. Zach Barrett ... lovely story. Is this indeed to what the song pays tribute?

I really want to post here, but I can't make up my mind. Upon Returning has definitely grown on me after giving it several listens on youtube. Based on the thought of losing you, i'm a little disappointed in that it doesn't sound like as new/unique of a style as each other album is. Also the drums didn't seem up to Dino's capabilities. As far as the lyrics go, hopefully the problem is that we don't understand (the context or otherwise). That said, after two listens it was stuck in my head the rest of the night. I definitely like the song and will listen to the shit out of this album.

Awesome! Thanks! I think of it too now when I hear the song. I was basically just freestyling in the comment box and breaking basic grammar rules.

I just hate seeing or thinking anything negative about dredg. I'm sure in the context of the album the song will fit and be more significant.

same with me! thanks zach barrett! and yes it's shitty to think or read anything negative about dredg...but i need to be honest. like you said, it will fit into the album, but when i listen to previous songs it breaks my heart a little bit.

I must be the only fan that absolutely loves the new single. I fell in love with them when I heard Leitmotif and then El Cielo back in '02, so it's not like I'm not familiar with dredg's older sound. Every album since has been a big change, but always for the positive IMO. I'm not sure how anyone views "the thought of losing you" as a huge change. To me, it evokes the same emotional reaction every dredg song ever has, but now it's in the format of a slightly lighter, poppier sound. I like it, and I wouldn't have wanted dredg to repeat any of their previous sounds. dredg is always evolving, and that's why I love them.

I don't see what the big deal is. This sounds excellent. It is absolutely Dredg. And I thought I was picky ;).

I'm curious to see how the site layout is going to change for the new motif.

And that is why people (on this site) are always crapping on the singles. Through the first listen I was reminded of the first time I heard Saviour. I now love that song as I will probably love this one in due time.
