Gavin does have a gift for writing lyrics. But he also knows how to sing great melodies and has a great voice which is more important than the actual words. But it is nice to see him put both together. Not many popular singers out there right now that can say the same

Very well said. Gavin is definitely up with my favorite lyricists/singers right now. Also thanks for posting Steven Wilson’s lyrics, he certainly is a GREAT songwriter too, but more a writer/guitarist than a singer to me.
    It’s quite difficult to compare Gavin’s talent, but this is what I can come up with;

    • Shannon Hoon, who wrote absolutely beautiful lyrics and also sang (much like Gavin) great vocal harmonies.
    • Maynard James Keenan, writes excellent and thought provoking lyrics (for both Tool & A Perfect Circle) and is probably one of the best singers out there.
    • Layne Staley. His lyrics for Alice In Chains’ Facelift & Dirt were a bit bleak, but I think his lyrics for Jar Of Flies, Alice In Chains (that 3rd full length album) & Mad Season read a bit more like poetry. His voice was one of a kind.
    • Neil Finn, excellent songwriter. Pretty good singer too (especially when Neil & Tim Finn are channeling vocal harmonies).

I also need to mention Chris DeGarmo, who isn’t a singer but also a very talented (and my favorite) songwriter. Some of you may know he worked with dredg on the Catch Without Arms album.

I'm glad someone else is aware of his mastery. Seriously, no other singer has ever been able to make me feel the way that Shannon could. I don't think anyone else has been able to convey their inner struggles better than he could, either.

umm can't believe Eddie Vedder hasn't been mentioned yet... I'd go into some good example of lyrics but don't feel like typing for an hour.

And for that matter, Chris Cornell?

totally agree with James Keenan from tool, and Shanon Hoon from Blind Melon, the song change is amazing.

My morning jacket, Filter, led zepplin, these bands also has some good lyrics,

I am a little disappointed in this thread. I thought I would be introduced to some great writers but it seems to be everyone melting over their favorite bands' writers/ vocalists works. Writing that compares to Gavin's? I think the greatest written works are poems so I would introduce you to Hafiz (The Gift traslated by Daniel Ladinsky) and Rumi but writers period Robert Frost, and John Keats.

youre what 17 years old? you wouldnt know how to read anyway, so yeah continue to reference your favorite band's singers as great writers

Ahh, you gotta love those self-anointed internet sophisticates.

Now, for a person that considers themselves such an expert on literature and prose, the grammar of that message is hilarious.

Sounds like you already know what type of poetry/writing you like. This is the Dredg.com forum.
Are you really surprised that the focus is on similar vocalists rather than just writers ?

Great lyrics stick with you. Most people can replay favorite songs in their head like a tape recorder. They can also re interpret lyrics so that they relate to personal experiences, making the music much more meaningful.
Can't say the same for great books or poems.
