El Cielo or TPTPTD? (or even Leittmotif or CWA!)
El Cielo and TPTPTD - Two very similar and two very well-received albums. But which do you prefer? CWA wasn't as well-received so I'm not directly including that one in the comparison, and Leitmotif is the older album not as well celebrated - I believe the band aren't playing anything at all from it live these days, they certainly didn't the other day. So say which album you prefer and justify it, while even saying if you think Leitmotif or CWA are better than either.
For me TPTPTD doesn't quite hit the heady heights of El Cielo, although there are a few songs which are as good as El Cielo. Consistency is the key here, I would be going for TPTPTD if it was just a bit stronger overall. Faves from El Cielo include Sanzen, Same Ol' Road, Triangle, Of The Room and The Canyon Behind Her while faves from TPTPTD include Pariah, Light Switch, Information, R U OK? and Down To The Cellar. Looking at those ten songs it is very difficult to separate them, although again El Cielo just edges it. So El Cielo is better for me.
What about you?

Basically, I put the other three above CWA, but I can't give them any order. It all depends on my mood.

I am not familiar with Dredgs Leitmotif only having heard a couple of songs from it, but would have to say out of El Cielo, CWA, and TPTPTD that really I shouldn't compare them, they are each different in mood and style...certainly as far as accessibility goes CWA is the most accessible of Dredg albums and I know that some prog rock fans dislike its lack of complexity, for me I like the melody...it may lack some of the complexity of El Cielo or TPTPTD, but its still hardly middle of the road rock that you would hear in episodes of Greys Anatomy, Ghost Whisperer and the rest of those chick dramas. (Information from TPTPTD also comes close to being MOR)
So I don't know, I like them differently..in the car CWA is a fantastic album, at home on a decent HI FI I adore El Cielo to chill too, especially the Super Audio CD layer sounds awesome in 5.1...and that is something that would have also been fantastic on TPTPTD to have had a SACD release. I don't really have a favourite, I like them all, each have tracks I am not too fond on, each have tracks I adore. -

No, a SACD release would not be cool. Screw SACD. It was a failed medium. Give me DVD-A any day of the week. -

Now that is a very peculiar statement you make there, considering that DVD-A releases have all but dried up, and SACD releases are few and far between, both could be considered as failed mediums, however out of the two mediums it is SACD that gives the best resolution of sound and El Cielo sounded absolutely amazing in SACD.
Add to this the fact that SACD can be hybrid disks such as El Cielo was, makes SACD the better choice for audio being compatible with regular CD players, SACD players, and Universal DVD Players that play SACD and DVD-A (admittedly DVD-A has the advantage of video as well as sound, but I like to buy an album to listen, not read the lyrics on screen etc)
Are you sure you are not getting DVD-A mixed up with bog standard 5.1 or DTS music releases? -

RE: El Cielo or TPTPTD? (or even Leittmotif or CWA!)
Just a little complex situation. My first dredg album was Catch Without Arms. I liked it so much (well, I still do, that's good stuff, overall), until I discovered El Cielo. I was passing some trouble in my life at that moment, so I began loving this mystic album, and its sleep-paralysis-inducing qualities. EPs were too rough for my ears, and still Leitmotif was too powerful, I thought it was a mess-up. Time passed, waiting years for the new dredg album, and I arrived to a shift in my life: I had to change and purify my soul. I gave another chance to Leitmotif, and that worked, mainly for Change (?, Symbol Song), as you can guess watching my avatar. The rest of the album is still awesome. At last, The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion was released. An important lp, way better than Catch Without Arms, but IMO it cannot reach the level of the first two albums.
That's like
1° El Cielo
2° Leitmotif
3° The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion
4° Catch Without Arms
but El Cielo and Leitmotif are really close.
At last, I usually associate dredg albums to seasons: Leitmotif for Winter, The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion for Spring, Catch Without Arms for Summer and El Cielo for Autumn. -

how could you put el cielo at #3 and leitmotif at the bottom?????? must be a newer fan.
For me el cielo is the best album I have ever heard Dredg or not. -

The new album is so interesting... you can sit, close your eyes and start enjoying it till the last track, just like we can with EL CIELO. But, i think there's no comparison, each one has a different sound and it's own feeling/atmosphere.

el cielo is amazing and maybe the best album ever, but after listening the tptptd it is getting up there too. i think the best thing to say would be that dredg is just the best band ever.

RE: El Cielo or TPTPTD? (or even Leittmotif or CWA!)
Lietmotif is the greatest for me. The raw emotion. The driving nature of the album. Short simple and to a great point. If they aren't playing any of the songs live, I'm only going to one show.
Then TPTPTD and El cielo. Right now the newness gives TPTPTD the slight edge.
CWA was okay but just lacked something. -

RE: El Cielo or TPTPTD? (or even Leittmotif or CWA!)
For me right now it's:
1. El Cielo
2. The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion
3. Catch without arms (giving Leitmotif the edge cause of the B- Sides)
4. Leitmotif -

That's great. I've never thought of it like this, but now I can see...
As for me, here's the album order:
#1
Leitmotif, because of all the times I have listened to this album entirely and because of the great concept of the protagonist's journey. Just love it.
#2
el cielo & TPTPTD ex aequo, because they are both great albums. While TPTPTD still growing on me, I agree with "lives like tribes" that el cielo has some great heights, that I'm still missing on The Pariah,..In the end I've to say both albums are great in their own way and I can't give one the preference.
#3
Catch Without Arms, still great music with great songs. -

Oh I love your post about putting the albums with certain seasons and you have nailed it for me there. Especially with CWOA being a summer ablum. That CD got me through a lot the summer after I finished high school and was going through some shit in my lffe.

RE: El Cielo or TPTPTD? (or even Leittmotif or CWA!)
Actually of all the dredg albums, my favorite is CWA. Sure, it's the most straightforward, but damn is it good - El Cielo is definately close though. In fact, both would be in my top 10 off all time. Its just that CWA hasn't gotten as old as El Cielo, especially since it was my first album from them.
So my ranking would be:
1. CWA
2. El Cielo
3. Leitmotif (underrated)
4. TP, tP, tD (still great) -

I'm talking about the DTS mixes. My main issue with SACD is that you have to have a seperate SACD player to hear it fully. As for the mixes, the DTS version of Deadwing by Porcupine Tree is right up there with the mixing of the SACD El Cielo. I don't mind having to get seperate copies of great albums, as I've bought several albums I already own when I find them on vinyl. I'd just rather not have to buy a new piece of hardware to listen to one album.
I asked Drew about future DTS or SACD releases and he said doubtful. The other one kind of just happened and had a lot to do with Interscope. Maybe if they hook up with Steven Wilson or something he could make it happen.
