Problems with Vinyl
First off, love the album! So far my favorite has to be "Mourning This Morning". I was really excited to be able to get the album on Vinyl and had it pre-ordered as soon as it was available. I got it on Monday and got to play it for the first time yesterday. The first record played through and was wonderful in a way that only vinyl can be. Sadly, "C" side skips about half way through Saviour. I called Merchnow and it seems like they have gotten a bunch of calls about this. They said they were aware that they may have some bad pressings of the album and I would be getting a replacement in 4-6 weeks. Has anyone else here had this issue?
I appreciate that they are going to replace them pretty easily, but I am pretty bummed that I can't listen to the entire album until then. I really wanted a lossless vinyl rip for my iPhone, but I guess I'll have to settle for a CD rip until then. Oh well.

That is definitely a bummer, but on the bright side you can frame your first copy and make for some sweet decoration!

RE: Problems with Vinyl
Yes - my copy also skips midway through Saviour. I tried cleaning it with a cotton rag and alcohol/water solution - hoping, maybe, I could eliminate some excess vinyl, etc, to no avail.
Funny thing about that. I fell in love with my vinyl copy so hard - that I don't want to return it, despite the scratch. Now that I find out a bunch of them left the factory that way - - I will definitely hold on to this coveted piece of (scratched) vinyl. The rewards in listening to the 3 remaining sides -not to mention, the remaining tracks on the scratched side - - far outweigh the skip in 'Saviour'.
That's a first, for me. Never in my history of purchasing record albums have I wanted to hold onto a scratched record. Such is the mezmerising power this new album holds, for me.
So my question becomes: Can I get a replacement *without* sending in my original? If not, I'll gladly pay for another. -

RE: Problems with Vinyl
The guy I talked to at Merchnow said I would get a new copy in 4-6 weeks after giving him my order number. He did not say anything about sending back the first one. I will definitely still listen to the rest, but there's something about listening to is all straight through. Oh well.
I took a close look at it and it looks like a bad pressing. It seems that two of the grooves are too close together and the needle skips back to the start of the first bad groove every time. I don't think they are scratched. Other than that the quality of the vinyl is very good and sounds absolutely amazing. I keep hoping that they will re-release their other material on vinyl (esp. el cielo and leitmotif), but I don't expect it to happen. I have a couple copies of el cielo on SACD, having actually bought an SACD player for that album alone, and really enjoy the higher quality (not to mention the surround sound). It would be amazing to have that on vinyl. -

No doubt, elcielo. I want their first three albums on vinyl, too. I'm certain they will be released on vinyl, eventually. Its just a matter of time. Now that the Pariah is on vinyl, I think we'll be seeing the first three re-issued on vinyl before too long. Got my fingers crossed.
I never heard the SACD version of El Cielo - that would be killer.
I bought my vinyl at a retail outlet. So I'm going to have to write the manufacturer - with a copy of my receipt, I suppose - and ask them what can they do for me. I refuse to let go of this scratched edition. I wonder: did they press ALL of them on that gray vinyl? Or is that a die hard thing. . . -

RE: Problems with Vinyl
It looks like they are all on Gray vinyl. I hope that is the case, if not I at least hope the replacement ones for us with defective copies are still gray.
If you ever have the opportunity to listen to el cielo on SACD, I would recommend it. It is mixed in surround, with some of the ambient noise and sounds in the surround channels. It's a very subtle surround effect, unlike many of the surround recordings on SACD and DVD-A. For example, the Flaming Lips DVD-A of Yoshimi is very obviously surround (in a very well done and enjoyable way), while el cielo is so subtle that you almost don't realize it at first. It's a very nice use of the surround capability of the format. Too bad the format's dead. I guess it's ok, as long as vinyl is an option!
As far as dredg's eariler albums, I really hope they do see the light of day on vinyl. Although I would need plenty of warning.... if I'm gonna have el cielo and leitmotif on vinyl, I may need to but a new turntable ;-). -

In the chat at absolutepink a week or so ago they said that if everything's go well with this vinyl, they plan to release Leitmotif next ;)

yes. i would hope that if/when they release that, they'd release different versions that included the brown packaging and another version with the original artwork.
YES I WANT TO BUY TWO VERSIONS OF THE VINYL FOR NO PARTICULAR REASON.

I haven't listened to mine yet.... I hope it doesn't have this issue.
Update: Dammit. Guess I need to email MerchNow :( -

RE: Problems with Vinyl
the guy I talked to at Merchnow was really cool and made the whole process nice and painless. just kind of a bummer that it's gonna take 4-6 weeks to get a new one. Kind of defeats the purpose of pre-ordering. I'm gonna hit a few local record shops on my lunch break to see if I can find another copy. Always good to have a spare!

RE: Problems with Vinyl
I think it's cool that so many people here still enjoy vinyl, a lot of people I know aren't aware that it is even produced anymore. If/when they do release leitmotif on vinyl, I would hope for the original artwork, but more than likely I would expect the brown re-release art.

Be careful, el cielo - - since a whole bunch of em left the factory with that defect, most retail store outlets will have received the damaged ones, too. That's where I bought mine, at a local Graywhale CD store - and I spoke openly and honestly about this defect with the manager there. Most retail store owners that find out this defect comes from the manufacturer, are going to re-direct you to them for a replacement. At least that's what I was told by this store manager. I wonder how many copies shipped from the factory feature this defect? -

RE: Problems with Vinyl
That's not good so many copies had this defect. Bad luck :(
And I won't be able to hear mine anytime soon. You say it's possible to be seen? -

RE: Problems with Vinyl
I just listened to my copy of the LP this morning. Sure enough, it's a defect.
Called MerchNow and they're shipping a new. I'm really glad that they're really cool about it. Dealing with distributors can be a pain sometimes.
Also, Leitmotif on vinyl would be AMAZING!
Like evasivetear, I would have no problem with buying two copies if they released both album covers. =D -

"The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion" vinyl release
Anyone else notice the looped section on "Saviour"? I get about 2 minutes or so into the song and it starts looping this 5 second section.

RE: Problems with Vinyl
I figured that there would be a good chance that copies from local stores would have the defect as well. I figure if I get another defective one I'll still get it replaced and end up with two good copies. Not a problem in my book since vinyl has a limited number of plays.
On a side note, I stopped by a local audio gear dealer to take a look at the model of turntable I want to buy (a Music Hall mmf 5.1 SE if anyone is interested), and got to listen to the playable parts of my current copy on a set of $20,000 speakers being pushed by some nice McIntosh amps. It was awesome, just makes it hard to go home to my current turntable :-). The guy at the shop was looking through the stack of vinyl I had with me and by the time I left he was firing up their Sonos and listening to el cielo on rhapsody. We may have a new convert! -

I will take a damaged copy I just bought it to support the band. I don't even own a record player.
